Hans Bayens (1924-2003) was born in the Belgian Ardennes where his parents temporarily rented a Studio.
Shortly after his birth the family moved to Amsterdam. His parents were very involved in the Amsterdam artists' life, leaving him surrounded by writers and artists since childhood. He got his first modelling lessons from sculptor Leo Braat.
Hans Bayens portrayed, among others, conductor Ricardo Chailly, the politician Willem Drees Sr. and cabaret artist Wim Kan. Also landscapes and still lifes in expressionist style arose.
He made images of important Dutch writers such as Multatuli (on the Singel Canal in Amsterdam), Theo Thijssen (Lindengracht) and in the Oosterpark the 'Homage to Nescio'.
