Smart shipping and manual shipping
Smart shipping makes shipping quick and easy. You get a pre-filled shipping label at a discounted price (up to 35% less than if you buy a shipping label yourself) and you have the option to add insurance directly while submitting your object or once your object is sold.
This differs from manual shipping. With manual shipping, you set the shipping price, choose your own insurance and buy your own shipping label.
What is smart shipping insurance?
Smart shipping insurance provides you with reliable and stress-free insurance when shipping your order. We’ve partnered with XCover to provide this insurance.
XCover’s digital claim process is simple and hassle-free with instant payment of approved claims.
Adding insurance to smart shipping
While submitting an object, you can choose to add smart shipping insurance. When you do this, you'll see the possible cost of insurance based on the estimated value you give your object during submission.
After the auction has ended or a buyer has successfully used buy now, you will receive the precise insurance cost and can choose to add or remove insurance. We recommend taking photos of the object in its packaging before shipping.
Smart shipping insurance costs a small percentage of the final bid or buy now amount.
Managing your insurance
After purchasing smart shipping insurance while submitting your object or once your object is sold, an XCover account will automatically be created for you. XCover will send a confirmation email or text that includes an activation link to set up your XCover account.
Within your XCover account, at any time you can:
- View your policy wording: this is also available when you submit an object with insurance via Catawiki.
- Download your insurance certificate/invoice.
To see your full policy and report loss, damage or theft during shipping, log in to the XCover website.

What you’re covered for
Smart shipping insurance covers the final bid or buy now amount of your object for theft, loss or damage from your shipping date until the shipping company marks your object as delivered.
Log in to your XCover account and check your policy wording to find out what you are and are not covered for in more detail.
For more info on smart shipping insurance coverage check XCover’s help centre and the policy wording.
What you’re not covered for
If the order is lost, damaged or stolen before shipping or after the shipping company marks it as delivered, you won’t be reimbursed.
Always make sure your object is properly packaged. Having pictures of how you packaged your object for shipping will help to assess your claim.
Smart shipping insurance doesn’t cover shipping costs, only the amount of the final bid or buy now price. Nor does it cover any duties or taxes applied to return shipping or re-shipping.
If your object’s final bid or buy now price goes above €10,000, it won’t be covered by smart shipping insurance.
Log in to your XCover account and check your policy wording for more details on what you are and are not covered for.

When does smart shipping insurance start and end?
Your coverage starts on the shipping date and ends when the shipping company marks your object as delivered.

How to report loss, damage or theft
1. Log in to your XCover account. You should see your policies (orders). Select the policy (order) you would like to make a claim for and then select ‘Make a claim’.
2. Confirm the reference number (tracking number) and select ‘Start a new claim’.
3. Fill in the required info and send your claim when you’re done.
You‘ll be asked to provide info and documents that support your claim, for example photos of the damaged object. Clear and comprehensive documents will help XCover assess your claim faster. Visit the XCover help centre for more info.
Before you make a claim, you’ll need to activate your XCover account.
When to start the claim process with XCover
Please make a claim as soon as you suspect that your object is damaged, stolen or lost. The biggest cause of delays is incorrect or missing paperwork, without which your claim status will be changed to ‘pending’ or ‘closed’, depending on the time taken.
- XCover's claims team prioritises claims that are filed within 7 days of the order being lost, damaged or stolen during shipping.
- If the shipping company says the object has been delivered but the buyer hasn't received it, make sure to start the claim within 10 days of the date and time shown by the carrier as delivered.
- If the shipping company says the object hasn’t been delivered, make sure to start the claim no later than 30 days (60 days for international shipping) after the shipped date or shipping company pickup.
- If the package is damaged during shipping, make sure to start the claim no later than 14 days after delivery.
Make sure to contact us about any issues with your delivery so we can help you find a solution with the buyer.
