The locomotives were used in international traffic until 2010, mainly between Ostend and Cologne. The locomotives of the series HLE 16 were in 2 part series built by B&N from Nivelles and ACEC Charlerois in which B&N built the mechanical part and the housing and the electrical part and engine were built by ACEC. The locomotives were delivered as Type 160 in 2 part series and got the company numbers 160.001 to 160.004 (first series) and 160.021 to 160.024 (2nd series). In 1971 both series were reclassified as HLE 16/Series 16 and renumbered with the numbers 1601 to 1608. The locomotives of the series 16 are multiple-system locomotives which were suitable to run on the Belgian, German, Swiss, French and Dutch catenary. The locomotives were mainly used for international traffic between Ostend and Cologne. The locomotives were also used sporadically between Brussels and Paris and from Brussels to Luxembourg. In 1974, the locomotives also for a short time were used as holiday train "Freccia del Sole” to the Swiss Spiez. For this the locomotives were equipped with a fourth pantograph. Starting from 2002 the locomotives of the series HLE 16/Series 16 because of an outdated Indusi installation no longer are allowed to drive in Germany. In 2009 the last locomotives of the series 16 were put aside, because enough other equipment was available. The locomotives were finally decommissioned in 2010. Two locomotives (1602 and 1608) are preserved. The remaining locomotives are demolished.
