Gold pendant with Saint James's scallop shell
Pendant in yellow gold with St. James's scallop shell. The shell opens, and on one side there is St. James Cross, and on the other side there is an image of the Apostle.
The shell of St. James is the symbol of pilgrims who go on the pilgrimage along St. James's Trail to Santiago de Compostela in order to pay homage to the Apostle. The scallop shell came to be called St. James's shell because when pilgrims arrived at Santiago de Compostela, each one would receive a parchment certifying the completion of the pilgrimage, and a scallop shell would be placed on his or her hat or coat to serve as proof of having visited Santiago upon return home.
It symbolizes generosity, a virtue that should accompany anyone who completed the pilgrimage for the rest of his or her life.
