The Story of Guillermo Fierro and His Lean, Mean Vintage Racing Machine

Spanish entrepreneur and racing driver Guillermo Fierro is a household name when it comes to classic car racing. The 56 year old empresario has been a car enthusiast for decades and is still participating in a large number of races across Europe. But what is it about racing which has kept Guillermo driving for so many years? We caught up with him at the 45th Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in Germany. Our meeting with Guillermo took place at perhaps the most iconic racing track in the world. “The Ring”, as they call, was inaugurated in 1927 and has seen countless iconic racing cars over the years. One of them is the Maserati 250F, a mono-seated racer from the 1950s with a low snout, long bonnet, shapely tail and bold red paint job. Fierro owns a ’56 model and still races it frequently. It’s the first historic racing car he ever bought and confesses to have a stronger bond with this car than with any other vehicle he ever owned.

The front-engined car is a joy to drive if you know how: “You are about to lose it, but you don't and you end up mastering, dancing with the car”, the Spanish driver explains.

Inspiration Behind the Ownership
Guillermo acquired the Maserati 250F because he had heard so much about it from former pilots who praised the car for it’s unique character. He recalls, "I got the car because I read from old time pilots (...) who have driven this car and who said that it was their favourite car. So I was very curious to know why and the first time I drove the car, I knew why."

It's like a mother

The relationship Guillermo has with the Maserati can be referred to as unconventional, to say the least. He likes to refer to it as a caring mother for this reason: “It is such a progressive car, so forgiving that it teaches you a lot and then it takes care of you. It's like a mother in a way.”

To Sell or Not to Sell?
Besides the historic and financial value of his Maserati 250F Guillermo still races the car frequently. The environment of the racetrack forces him and his vehicle to go to both of their limits, risking damage to the car and driver. Still, Fierro would never sell the favourite piece of his collection: “No no no, no - I do know the car’s market price, but I wouldn't sell it because I don't want to sell the car.”, he says. Instead, Guillermo has other plans with the car, as he revealed to us: “I think that in the future if I give that to my children. it would be a very good investment. So it's something that you want to keep.” And then he adds: “No, a mother you don't sell. Not for all money in the world.” We wouldn’t either.
