Medal of the French Resistance - June 18, 1940

Medal of the French Resistance - 1943. Medal and ribbon in good condition. The Medal of the French Resistance is a French decoration established in London, by order of 9 February 1943 of general de Gaulle, leader of the fighting France. Its purpose was to "recognise the remarkable acts of faith and of courage that, in France, in the Empire and abroad, have contributed to the Resistance of the french people against the enemy and against its accomplices since June 18, 1940." It is the second, and only other, decoration created after the order of the Liberation, during World War II, by general de Gaulle. The French Resistance medal has been awarded to approximately 65, 295 people including 25,000 posthumously, as well for the free French as to the inside Resistance. It was also awarded to eighteen local authorities, to twenty one military units of the three armed forces and fifteen other communities (schools, hospitals, monasteries, etc.). The Medal of the French Resistance is no more awarded since March 31, 1947, except for the Resistance in Indochina, for which the date was extended until December 31, 1947. The Medal of the French Resistance was conferred by order of the head of the fighting France, the president of the provisional Government of the Republic and then, from January 1, 1947, by the President of the Republic. It can still be awarded, posthumously, under the same conditions, but only to those killed during the war or died in deportation as a result of acts of resistance. Medal: round, bronze patina or gilded, of a 37 mm module. The obverse represents a circular shield with a cross of Lorraine with, in highlight, "June 18, 1940" written in Roman numerals (XVIII.VI. MCMXL). The reverse has the Latin inscription "Patria non immemor" (the homeland don't forget). Ribbon: black vertically crossed by two lateral red stripes of 3 millimetres wide and four stripes of 1 mm, including two spaced medians of 2 millimetres, and two intermediaries of the medians of 6 millimetres.
